Agnes Crow will not be available until after November 5, 1984, to review the Senior Helping Hands program. A representative from the Laurel Senior Citizens could not be present today but Bob will contact them to attend at a later date. Received an estimate of $44,300 from Merle Cherry Construction to install an elevator in City Hall to make the Council Chambers, Judge's Chambers and Courtroom accessible to handicapped indi- viduals. Bob will check the cost of a closed circuit TV and 2-way communication system. Merle Cherry will also be giving us an estimate of what it would cost to renovate the rest rooms in City Hall. Paul Peterson, representing the Laurel Ministerial Association, was present to give the committee a report on the Transient Relief Fund which is a secondary recipient of Revenue Sharing money. At the present time they do not have a written policy. However, they are in the process of writing one. Paul said that they do not discriminate against handicapped people nor anyone else. They give assistance such as gas, meals, groceries, place to stay, etc. The needy apply for assistance at the FAP Complex (Police Station) which is accessible to handicapped persons. No questions are generally asked if the person requesting help is handicapped or not, because they will give assistance to anyone. Riverside Park restrooms were discussed and a question came up as to the accessability for wheelchairs. Maybe a better ramp of pavement or concrete might have to be built. Parks activities.were discussed. There is no discrimination. Staff and materials can be provided, if needed, to assist handi- capped people. The swimming pool and bathrooms are assessible for handicapped people. Swimming for handicapped people are generally from 8_9 p.m. with adults. Swimming lessons are open to all individuals. Some device of sound and light should be considered for emergency purposes so that hearing and sight impaired persons could respond. There is some difficulty for a handicapped person to enter and get out of the pool. A ramp inside the pool would solve this problem. However, the pool is in generally poor condition and should be rebuilt or replaced before adding a ramp. Margit will contact Eastern Montana College and review their swimming program. Meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m. Next meeting is scheduled for November 13th at 4:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Donald L. Hackmann Cit Clerk Y Section 504 Coordinator
