Staudinger brought up idea of a fund to pay for sewer back ups. The City of Laurel would add a .25 cent surcharge to sewer bills and pay for back ups that the insurance company did not pay for. After discussion it was decided that this would create a problem of control on what gets paid and who gets paid and how much. Larry brought up problem at 417 Laurmac. The water line broke in front of 417 and followed the water service line in to the basement. The owner has filed a claim with the City of Laurel insurance company. Phil Curry explained the problem and that who ever laid the line had dumped the entire old curb in the trench on top of the pipe. Larry McCann discussed the repairs that have taken place at the Water Intake. The intake had not been cleaned for 3 or 4 years. We had to purchase a new dredge pump, replace a gate and hire the divers to assist. This has been an expensive project; future cost should not be as expensive in that through this cleaning we have determined operational improvements. Estimated costs are $10.000.00. Larry reported on a survey of the river bottom conducted by Mr. Roger Perkins. Roger will be making a report to the committee on his findings. He also will present a proposal to cure water level issues at the intake. The present levels are not good and we may have problems this winter. At this time we are not allowed to work in the river unless it is an emergency. Jeanette brought up problems with our water shut off policy; we had 23 people on the list for shut off. This is a waste of manpower and we need to rewrite the present ordinance. Duke Nieskins the Plants Superintendent has some ideas that work and will help in the rewrite.
