Motion carried. Gay moved, Jim seconded that we table a letter from the Laurel Chamber of Commerce requesting to place a tent in Thomson Park during the Fourth of July celebration to allow local retailers to sell their wares from the tent. Motion carried. The committee has maintained a policy of allowing non-profit groups only in the park to protect the concession stand sales of the Little League/ Dodgers baseball team organizations who put all the profits from the sales of the concession stand back into the park. The committee will study further the request and invite a representative from the chamber to the committtee. Reports were given on the pool; Riverside Park (which is closed due to high water); and tree trimming in Thomson Park. The trees in Thomson Park are falling victim to a fungus infection and plans need to be made to begin replacing the trees there. More study into the type of tree, etc, will be made. The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m. Re pectfully su mitted, Donna G. Kilpatr? ?chaian Laurel Chamber of Commerce P.O. Box 395 LAUREL, MONTANA 59044-0395 628-8105 June 2, 1997 Laurel City Parks Department Donna Kilpatrick P.O- Box 10 Laurel, MT 59044 Dear Donna: The Laurel Chamber of Commerce Retail Trades Committee recently met to discuss Crazy Days and the Fourth of July Sidewalk Sales. Discussion held at the. meeting centered around' the retailers of Laurel being able to capitalize on the amount of people in Laurel and sales for their'small businesses. This Committee would like to seek permission to 'set up a large lighted tent in Thompson Park. ln`order`to selL' their goods from 5:00 p.m. to the onset of the FireworK's. Display': The reason for this time period is so that. sales will".not Interfeire with the Firemen's Barbecue. It was also requested that permission be granted for booth spaces to be set up during the day for `crafters, and other groups. A fee could be charged to the crafters wanting a space with that money going directly to the Fire Department. The Retail Trades Committee would be glad to handle all of the paperwork involved in booth space rentals if it would be a problem for the Park Department. This way too, the non-profit organizations would not be hurt and could capitalize on all of the events and people in the park on the Fourth. All groups wanting a booth space would have to sign an agreement releasing the City of Laurel, Park Department, and the Laurel Chamber of Commerce from any liability resulting in an injury. The Retail Trades Committee feels that since there are so many people in Laurel during the Fourth of July, that steps should be taken to find more ways to help the Fire Department fund the firework's display and also benefit the small businesses that keep this town going. They feel that all year long they have to compete with the large department stores in Billings, and this might be a way to help their businesses capitalize on Billings residents spending money in Laurel. If it is too late in the season for permission to be granted for this to take place on July 4, 1997, maybe permission could be granted for this to take place on July 4, 1998, Please let me know as soon as possible of your decision. Thank you for your time and attention into this matter.
