HomeMy WebLinkAboutLaurel City-School Task Force on Drugs & Alcohol Minutes 09.20.2000Laurel City-School Task force on Drugs and Alcohol Minutes September 20, 2000 OCT Z 4 ?pC?O CITY OF Persons attending: Bud Johnson, Marvin Carter, Carolyn Boyd Reports - Laurel Juvenile Justice Coalition - No Task Force member was present at their last meeting. YMCA - Carolyn had fliers of present Y activities being offered in Laurel. Marvin Carter will contact Donna Kilpatrick from the Juvenile Justice Coalition to ask if some of the money available to the Coalition could be used for scholarships to Y activities. Carolyn will contact Donna Hirt, Director of Activities in Laurel to determine how the Task Force could be of help to the Y. Billings Drug and Alcohol Task Force - Judge Kerr has been notified of the subcommittee working on the Insight program and Task Force members will be kept advised of activities. Chemical dependency evaluation and treatment by the Mental Health Center in Laurel - Letters of support for providing services in Laurel have been submitted to Dot Reichert as well as a letter from the School District offering space for services. Dave Ward has been following this issue and will keep us updated. Interdisciplinary Team - Supt. McMilin is continuing- to work on this program. Student survey - Carolyn Boyd reported on her conversation with Professor Joe Floyd about the possibility of having him or one of his classes help design and analyze' a survey' that would be distributed to high school and middle school students. There is a fee for these services. He will be invited to attend a Task Force meeting to further discuss his possible role. Soliciting input from students who are involved with Dave Ward and Judge Kerr was suggested as an alternative or addition to a school based survey. News articles - Carolyn has contacted Mr. Michunovich who will suggest to Mr. Butler, Project Excell Director, and the School to Work program the possibility of having a student write news articles about drug and alcohol related issues for local news outlets. School Resource Officer - This issue will be discussed at the upcoming joint School Board-City Council meeting. The need for community education about the role of an SRO and a detailed listing of responsibilities of both the School District and City were discussed as necessary before a position is established. The possibility of inviting student representatives from RAD and STAND to a Task Force meeting was discussed. Carolyn Boyd copies to Henman, Olson, Johnson, Carter, McMilin, Rodgers
