Task Force, school district and community members toured the Y tl1-A-? -UHEL
Center in Billings. The tour was presented by Ron Walters, Court Services Officer.
Persons attending were: Del Henman, Randy Peers, Bud Johnson, Bob Smith, Steve
O'Neill, Denny Mogan, Doug Neihart, Deb McGrath, Flo Gold, Carolyn Boyd
The Treatment Center offers free screening and assessment for troubled Yellowstone
County youth. The evaluation looks at a variety of risk factors including substance
use/abuse, health status, mental health status, family relationships, peer relations,
educational status, vocational status, social skills, leisure and recreational skills,
aggressive behavior and delinquency.
When significant needs are identified, youth are evaluated further by Assessment
Center staff, or when appropriate, through referrals to community professionals.
Treatment options are identified when needed.
A discussion of how Laurel can take advantage of this resource was held.
Presently:
1)Families can contact the assessment center to arrange an evaluation for a
child (264-6036)
2)Famiiies can be referred to the assessment center by school district
personnel, law enforcement and local agencies
3)Laurel police officers can transport laurel youth to the center when they are
arrested
Other options were discussed.
Referral from Laurel police for youth they arrest but do not transport to the
Center. Treatment Center staff would then follow-up with the youth and family.
Carolyn will share this idea with Chief Musson.
Referral to the Treatment Center for all students considered for suspension from
school. School Board members will discuss this at a Board meeting.
