Families were only allowed up to 5 gallons of trash per week and were encouraged to recycle everything possible. Recycling bins were provided (see attached letter). Terry Fink came to protest the bill for one trailer on Cedar Avenue. Dave Michael will look into it and make the necessary adjustment. Grant Lawver and Ben Deines protested the adjustment made to First Baptist School and indicated that there are other people using the can. Dave will look into the problem and make the necessary adjustment. Jim Flotkoetter from Western Drug inquired as to how the adjustment was made and Marvin Carter explained how the committee went through the process of determining the adjustment amount for each customer affected. He also had some ideas such as not picking up every day. He also questioned why the City bought land for the container site and didn't purchase it through the county tax sale. Thayne Rapp questioned the adjustment to 1209 E. 6th trailer court and apartments. The committee explained to him that we counted the number of units and charged accordingly. Dean Rankin from Coast to Coast asked about the apartments above the store, and it was explained to him that he had only been charged for 5 apts. and there are 15 apartments and that an adjustment should have been made before. Received a letter from the School District (see attached) concerning their rate increase. Box 10 Laurel, MT 59044 Dear Garbage Committee: Wayne Severtson Superintendent I will be unable to attend the garbage committee meeting on January 11, 1993 at 5:00 p.m. due to our board meeting that night but would like to have an explanation as to the reason for the increase in garbage rates which are now in effect. After reviewing the rate increases, it looks as if our annual garbage costs have increased from $2,862.00 to $6,318.00. Please advise me if I am incorrect. This amount of an increase,., especially in the middle of the fiscal year, seems somewhat excessive. In the notice I received, the reason listed for the increased rates was increased volume we are currently disposing of. The Board of Trustees will like to know what additional services you are providing now to justify the cost increase. As I understand it most schools have daily pickup for garbage collection except during the summer months. Will our rates change during the summer months because of less usage or are the rates prorated for the entire year? The Laurel School District appreciates the fine service the city provides us during the year. This letter is not to complain about the service but I feel I need to go to the Board with an explanation of the rate increase. The Laurel School District is trying to keep expenditures to a minimum increase due to limited funds we have now and because the outlook for the future seems to be very uncertain. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
