Additional representation from labor, elderly, and education is still needed, and Don Hackman stated he felt a better effort should be made to recruit persons from these areas. In the meantime, the committee will proceed with developing the survey. hs,4d-? It was mentioned that the construction of a new ham-school is being considered, and that a survey would be conducted as that project develops. The committee members felt it would be a good idea, if at all possible, to combine or coordinate the two surveys to prevent "survey fatigue" in the community. Gay will ask the chairman of the school board to attend the next committee meeting to discuss what survey information is needed by the school district and if the two surveys can, in fact, be done together. Don Hackman reported that $1,000 has been allocated from the Planning Budget to cover costs of the needs assessment survey. Barb addressed the issue of survey bias, and explained how it occurs. She also emphasized the importance of tailoring the survey questions specifically to the needs of Laurel. Using the Red Lodge survey as a pattern, the committee proceeded to draft the general demographics and housing questions. Kris will prepare the draft of these sections and send it to each member for review and comments/changes prior to the next meeting. Other matters discussed: - In 1992, there were 196 mobile spaces in east Laurel, and now there are 96; There are waiting lists in each of the elderly housing complexes in Laurel; Barb will prepare a survey for the local realtors to get information about the market needs in Laurel.
