HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 11.18.2008Minutes of the Laurel Public Library Board of Trustees November 18, 2008 Attending: Gail Brice (presiding), Margaret Freund, Bruce McCullough, Clair Killebrew, Christy Smith and Nancy Schmidt Minutes: The minutes of the October 14, 2008 meeting were read and approved. Correspondence None Circulation Report Traffic for October 2008 was up 10% over October 2007. Circulation for materials was down 7% from October 2007. Circulation of books alone was down 12% over last October. The biggest increase in circulating items was in media 28%. There were also 765 internet computer users for the month of September and 23 children's computer users. The total computer use is down from September 2008. Old Business The pay raise issue was discussed. Clair motioned to make pay raises retroactive to July 1, 2008 plus 3%. Margaret seconded the motion. Motion passed. Gail will write a letter to Bill Sheridan requesting that the pay raises be effective immediately and retroactive to July 1, 2008. The Daytime Book Club met for the 1 St time with 6 participants. Christy stated that the club will meet 2 times per month with story time available for children. Story time will be moved to Tuesday each week at 10 am effective immediately. Nancy showed screen shots of the library website along with an explanation of each link that will be provided. The lockers provided by the Library Trust have arrived but are not up yet. The left panels for 5 of the 6 lockers were not the correct panels and had to be reordered. The correct panels should arrive within the next 4 weeks. New Business The Community Room is being used more frequently than ever before. We currently have an EMT class meeting on Monday & Wednesday evenings, the Home School Knit & Crochet group meets the third Monday of each month, guitar lessons are held on Wednesday afternoon 2:30 - 4:00 and Saturday 9:15-10:15 & 10:30-11:30, Bunco meets the third Thursday of each month except December, and testing for Census workers is being held each Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Library Board letters of interest have been turned in to Nancy by Rachelle Tresch, Mike Dewey, and Rosanne Coy. These letters will be turned over to Mayor Olson for his appointment. Bernice Mason will present her annual holiday program, "Holiday Treasures", on Thursday, December 41h at 7:00 pm. Nancy has requested thoughts from board members on staff evaluations. It was decided that one more evaluation should be performed to let staff members know where they are in terms of their ability to perform their duties. Nancy will rewrite the evaluation forms to be job specific so that we have a better idea how well staff members are doing their job. The library is currently overseeing 4 community service workers. Two other workers have either finished the time required of them or have been let go because of poor performance. Nancy will report further on this subject next month. Time to address the Board No one addressed the board. Next regular meeting December 9, 2008 will be the next meeting.
