HomeMy WebLinkAboutFourth of July Committee Minutes 06.13.1997Laurel's Fourth of July Schedule of Events June 13, 1997 "Patriotism Starts in the Heart, 1997" is the theme for the Fourth of July celebration planned in Laurel. The theme was chosen from a contest sponsored by the Laurel Chamber of Commerce and submitted by Colleen McMilin of the Laurel Public Schools. The festivities actually begin Thursday, July 3 with a street dance sponsored by the Laurel Jaycees. The dance will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. in front of the Laurel-Worden Creamery on Second Avenue. The cost is $1.00; music is by Cimmaron. A pancake breakfast will be held Friday from 6 a.m. to lla.m.in Fireman's Park. Cost is $4.50 for adults; $3.00 for children 6 to 12; and under 6 free. The menu consists of pancakes, sausage, milk, coffee. The breakfast is sponsored by the Laurel Jaycees. The Kiddie Parade will be at 10 a.m. Friday beginning at the First Security Bank parking lot on Montana Ave. will move along Montana Ave. to Main St. one block west on Main to First Ave. and north on First Ave. to Ricci's Parking lot. The main parade, sponsored by the Laurel Chamber of Commerce, will begin at 11 a.m. at Woods Power Grip, west of town; move on Main St. east to Colorado Ave.. north on Colorado to East First St. and west on First St. to First Ave., north on First Ave. to Seventh St.,. west on Seventh St. to Third Ave., north on Third Ave. to Ninth St. and east on Ninth St. to the high school parking lot. Prizes will be given for the best entries in the categories of: Best Western; Best of the Parade; Best Automobile; Best Patriotic; Best Commercial; and Best Club. Awards to the winner of each parade category will be made in a presentation planned just prior to the fireworks display. Parade entry forms may be obtained by calling 628-8105 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The LVFD will provide a barbecue beginning at 11 a.m. in Thomson Park. The barbecue will consist of a barbecued beef sandwich, pickle, potato salad, pop, ice tea, or coffee for $3.50; just a barbecue beef sandwich will cost $2.00. Activities in Thomson Park during the afternoon will include a "Fire in the Hole Chili" contest with the winner advancing to the competition to be held at Metra during Fair Week; a dunking booth; dime toss, crafts, and food. There will be a baseball tournament sponsored by the Laurel Dodgers Baseball team. Music will be provided by "The Hawk" radio station; a remote broadcast is planned during the pancake breakfast. Groups participating in the afternoon activities in Thomson Park include Laurel Volunteer Fire Department and its auxiliary, the barbecue; Laurel Little Laurel's Fourth of July Schedule of Events June 13, 1997 League and the Dodgers Baseball organization, concession Stand; Pioneer Kiwanis Club, cotton candy, watermelon and ice cream bars; Lupus Association of Montana, snow cones; Evergreen Rebekah Lodge, dime toss; Laurel Arts and Crafts Guild, crafts; Christmas to Remember, Inc., chili contest; Laurel Federated Woman's Club, an afghan/throw display; Incare, Indian Fry bread, Indian tacos, lemonade, strawberry shortcake; Laurel Girls Softball team, dunking booth; Billings Motor Bike Assn., "glow in the dark" bracelets. The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department will present its annual fireworks display; but this year there'll be an added attraction-- a spectacular laser light show will be interspersed into the fireworks display. The fireworks is set begin at dusk. Streets to be closed during the Thursday night dance will be: West First St.from the alley east of city hall to Third Ave.; Second Ave. from Main St. to First St. and the alleys between First Ave. and Third Ave. Streets to be closed near Thomson Park include: East Eighth from First Ave. to the alley east of the high school A few parking spaces will be reserved for Firemen on East Sixth St. Additional garbage cans will be placed at the site of the breakfast in Fireman's Park; at the dance area and in Thomson Park.
