Dear City of Laurel,
Thank you so much to the Mayor and Council for approving our event; city staff for helping us
through the process; and Fire, Police and Ambulance for being at the 2017 run event to raise
awareness in our community for mental health issues and suicide prevention. The goal of Step
In and the Sam Meling Memorial Foundation is to bring this issue to light and give kids and
parents in our community the resources they need to prevent any other person from looking to
suicide as a solution for dealing with depression and other mental illnesses. Montana leads the
nation in suicides and our goal is to help as many people as we can to get the help they need and
work our way down that terrible list!
A few of the areas where funds have went to date include making professional counseling
available to youth, providing free counseling where needed, working with the local schools to
develop improved reporting options, and creating a website that has local and national resources
listed for easy access. Future goals are being developed but include creating local teen support
groups facilitated by professionals and continued outreach efforts to create understanding of the
issue, reduce the stigma of mental illness and educate people on how to get help.

generosity of people like you and the involvement of our community!
