CITY OF LAUREL
PARK BOARD
JUNE 5, 2008
5:30 P.M.
Members Present: Chairwoman Kate Hart Norm Stamper
Bill Haldaman Mark Mace
Staff Present: Public Works Director Bill Sheridan Kurt Markegard
Public Comments: There were none.
Chairwoman Hart called the meeting to order at 5:37 p.m. She opened with the approval of the
minutes of the Apri13`~, 2008, meeting. Norm Stamper motioned to approve the minutes, Mark Mace
seconded the motion. (Unanimously passed.)
Chairwomen Hart asked Kurt to give an update on the play toys and the bathroom installation at
both Kiwanis Park and Russell Park. Kurt mentioned that the funding for these items was exhausted and
that a budget amendment would have to be brought forward to complete by the 4~' of 7uly. Kurt said
that Russell Park could be finished in time, but that Nutting Park will be delayed due to the Little
League season. The construction will interfere with the games and that kids may be practicing while the
equipment is being installed. Norm stated that the basebalUsoftball season should be done in late Tune.
Bill Haldaman did question why the Thomson Park civic groups are getting so much help monetarily
when the Riverside groups have to pay for all their lights and electricity. Kurt explained that this is
exactly what they are trying to correct with the use of the leases. Kurt did state that the city water
pressure in Kiwanis Park is below the minimum needed to operate the mechanism inside the toilet. Kurt
thinks a pressure pump may have to be installed in the system to help with this type of issue with all the
system above Maryland Lane.
Kurt informed the Park Board that a single resident wanted to install a horseshoe pit at Nutting
Park. He would be required to help with the cost. Kurt said that both the city and the gentlemen that
requested the pit would have to make all improvements according to the National Standards of the
National Horseshoe Association.
Kurt handed out the lease agreement from the Little League and Legion group that are using the
Thomson Park fields. The agreement is a start, but falls short in some areas that the City of Laurel has to
be concerned with. Field light power is a major concern and this will need to be addressed before the
season progresses much further. Bill Sheridan, DPW Director, did address the board and give his idea of
what needs to be done to address the problems regarding the lights and the issues with the baseball
groups' expectations.
Kurt brought up the Tree City designation and what he needs to keep the designation intact. Kurt
thinks he is on track to spend the required amount of money on the program to keep the designation
label.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:48 p.m
Respectfully submitted,
