' The MOntana Municipal Insurance Authority and the MSU Local Government Center developed these · workshops in response to continuing turnover of City Council members and the increase in inquixies about the position. The purpose of these workshops is to introduce key elements in the public process and provide a forum for elected officials tO gain knowledge of and inquire about issues pertinent to their position in local government. . Who Should Attend? The workshops are designed for both newly elected and exp_erienced City Council members. While Mayors may also attend, we encourage Mayors to attend the 2008 Mayors ACademy (contact the Local Government Center for mor~ informafiori). What topics Willbe Covered? The proposed agenda for the workshops is as follows: 1. introduction to Munielpal Government a. Forms of Government b. Roles and Responsibilities of City Council Members. c.' Goal Setting and Strategic Plarm/ng 2. Montana's Open Meeting Laws and Ex Parte Communication 3. Ethics, Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct 4. Conduct of Council Meetings 5. Open Discussion How much dOes it COSt? There will be a charge Of $450 per Workshop, plus travel costs at a state ·rate to cover our expenses. This fee is per workshop, regardless of the number of participants. Participating cities and towns will be asked to work out how they will share costs amongst themselves. What il:l have to cancel? In the event that a registered council member cannot attend, please notify the Local Government Center as soon as is possible. It will be the responsibility of participating cities and towns to determine any changes to how costs will be divided. What if the weather is bad? The Montana Municipal Insurance Authority and the MSU Local Government Center will make every effort to arrive to workshops as scheduled. However, they reserve the right to cancel or workshops due to inclement weather. If a workshop is cancelled, there will be no Charge. QUESTIONS?
