HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Board Minutes 07.12.2016 Minutes of the Laurel Public Library Board of Trustees July 12,2016 Attending Clair Killebrew Bill Hanson Dixie Feller Rose Marie Kline Nancy Schmidt Minutes Clair motioned the minutes for May 2016 and June 2016 be accepted as read. Bill seconded the motion. Motion passed. Correspondence H&R Block sent a check in the amount of$120.00 to the Library Foundation. When a new H& R Block customer gets their taxes done a donation is made to the charity of their choice in the amount of$20.00. We may continue with this program next year also. Circulation Report—compared to same time period last year... Traffic: down 16.12%; circulation: all items circulated totaled 3,864 (including 297 eBooks), book circulation was up 1.5%, media circulation was up 17.75%, eBook checkouts for this month was 11%of total book circulation; computers: interne use was down 24.43%, children's use was down 2.86%, wi-fi use up 46.5%; patron cards: city residents made up 59% of registered users for June,registered county patrons was at 26.6%and out-of-county patrons 15%of users. There were 26 tech assists in June. Old Business The management budget was approved by the Council. Library staff each received a$0.60 per hour raise starting July 1, 2016. The Bonnie Preikszas estate has notified the Director that Laurel Public Library has been designated as a recipient for a large donation. Nancy will contact Shirley about filling out the paperwork to receive the donation. Nancy called River Ridge to determine when the flower boxes would be completed. The library is scheduled for next week. The performance evaluation training given by Pat Wagner in Bozeman on June 11th was very informational. The ideas and concepts are directed at Board members rather than Directors but the information shared could be used by anyone in a management position. It would be an excellent idea for all Board members to attend this type of training in the future. New Business Nancy attended the Federation Coordinator's meeting in Helena as well as the Montana State Library Commission meeting. She explained in detail the issue the State Library is having with Coal Severance Tax monies and why the EBSCO database was one of the items cut from the State Library budget. The loss of the EBSCO database will be felt more by school libraries than by public libraries. The State Library is looking for free or lower-cost alternatives to the EBSCO database for our patrons. The Summer Reading Program is off to a great start. Over 100 children signed up for the program. Our weekly activities will be at 1:00 pm each Wednesday until the end of July. Timed reading records will be accepted until July 29th. We hope to have all grand prizes given out by August 12th. World Book Online has been part of our learning access for patrons for the last 6 years. The price has continued to rise but online use has become stagnant. After some discussion Dixie motioned that we discontinue with World Book Online and instead purchase a new set of encyclopedias for use in the library. Clair seconded the motion. Motion passed. The possibility of a fall book sale was discussed. The idea was presented that we tentatively plan a book sale for the week prior to when the church in Billings holds their book sale. We are looking at around October 24th, 2016. Election of Board officers was discussed. Clair motioned that officers remain the same as last year. Bill seconded the motion. Motion passed. Rose Mare Kline will remain Board Chair,Dixie Feller will remain Vice-Chair and Clair Killebrew as Federation Representative.Nancy stated that there is still a vacancy on the board and would like to see some suggestions from other members. Dixie motioned the Board meeting be adjourned, Bill seconded the motion. Motion passed, meeting adjourned at 6:57 pm.
