Container Site Hours
Changes in container site hours are proposed to cut down on costs in the solid waste division. It will also
cut down on impacts to other projects.
Earlier this summer the City used a seasonal helper at the container site. Because the container site is open
over the lunch hour the individual working the container site gets 1/2 hour over time each day. The union
filed a grievance on the use of the seasonal helper and than required as per contract that the '/z hour
overtime be spread through the union employees as per union contract.
Because this creates problems with other project schedules the following is proposed.
Container hours changed to
Monday 7:30 to 11:45 AM
Thursday 7:30 to 11:45 AM
Friday 7: 30 to 11:45 AM
Saturday 7:30 to 3:00
On the weekday afternoons the individual assigned will do work orders, haul containers and do
maintenance on trucks and containers.
This also represents a savings to the City in overtime costs of$3272.88 dollars.
The other consideration is to close the container site on Saturdays from 11:45 to 12:45. Although they only
get V2 hour for lunch we do not have hand-washing facilities at site and they return to shop for lunch if we
close. This time frame gives the employee time to handle the person showing up at 11:45 and be done for
lunch. This would provide an additional savings of$1090.96 in overtime. The Saturday closure would have
the most impact on the residents of Laurel.
The new hours will be advertised in the outlook for two weeks before we change and the telephone
message at city hall will be changed when the new hours take effect expected to be December 10th 2001.
