Tuesday,March 8, 2016
5:00 P.M. at City Hall
MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Nelson, Chairman Mark Mace
Wally Hall Ken Olson
OTHERS PRESENT: Cathy Gabrian Kurt Markegard
The meeting was called to order by Chairman,Tom Nelson. There was no public in attendance.
Proposed resolution to change Section 5C of the Cemetery Procedure Manual:
This item was discussed at the November meeting. Tom reviewed the proposed wording and said he wanted the
City Attorney to look at this item but is unaware if he has. Cathy suggested that if we are going to change the
Policy&Procedures Manual by resolution, we need to look at the manual for any other changes and do them all
at the same time.
Ken would like to allow this item to go forward and then the commission can review the policy for any additional
changes later.
Tom asked the committee to look over the manual for changes before the next meeting. He felt it needs to be
done properly.
Ken recommended moving the change forward to the next workshop and to council for approval. It was agreed to
by the commission members.
This change would require the family to purchase a white upright marble stone to mark the grave until the time
that the veteran passes and the stone is provided by the VA. At that time, the original stone would be pulled and
destroyed,per VA regulations.
Section Markers& Street Names:
There was discussion about how nice the section markers are in the national cemetery. No one had any good
ideas for street names. The kiosk was installed to give visitors information about the cemetery but it is too small
to include a map of the cemetery.
Other:
Cathy showed the commission a book she completed for the American Legion. All veteran markers, not
including the two veteran sections, were photographed, location identified, info put on a spreadsheet and
highlighted on sections maps in green. Two sets were made with one staying in the clerk's office and the other
will be given to Richard Klose with the American Legion for their use. It is Cathy's hope that both books will be
updated with any new veteran stones in the future.
Cathy said Section H has been opened and plots have been sold. She explained that access to Section H is
through is gate to the National Cemetery. There will have to be coordination with the national cemetery when
there is a burial.
Kurt explained the road on the north needs to be moved and grading needs to be done to portions of Sections A
and I. We need to put a road in between Sections A and I and this would loop a procession back through our
cemetery and out our main gate. Kurt would like to install a sidewalk between Sections G and H.
The meeting adjourned at 6:00 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cathy Gabrian
