SUBJECT: Discovery of abandoned underground petroleum tank at Big Sky Woodcrafters, 305
West Main Street, Laurel MT 59044
Mr. Klotz:
The Department of Environmental Quality (the department), was recently informed of an
petroleum storage tank discovered under the sidewalk at Big Sky Woodcraflers, 305 West Main
Street, Laurel MT. This location places the tank on the right-of-way property owned and
maintained by the City of Laurel.
Please be advised of the following:
1. The UST system is substandard and has been out of use for over a year; therefore, the
system must be closed properly. Montana UST regulations and the Uniform Fire Code
require that an UST system be permanently closed (removed) before the end of a 12-
month out of use period.
2. Owners and operators of UST systems are required to notify the department of the UST
systems. Complete and sign the form entitled "Notification for Underground Storage
Tanks" and return it to this office within 15 days.
3. There is approximately 45 inches of liquid that must be removed immediately. Please
properly empty this tank ~vithin 15 days. Contact me at the department when this is done.
COMPLIANCE:
Complete and submit the enclosed Notification Form by June 30, 2006.
Empty the tank to less than one inch of product by June 30, 2006.
Complete the enclosed permit application for removal of the tank(s) within 15 days of
receipt of this letter.
A licensed installer/remover must conduct the work. Soil samples must be collected and
analyzed according to permit stipulations. Complete all closure documents, which will be
provided with your removal permit. Return all forms to this office within 30 days of system
closure.
