The bid opening for the Cemetery Sprinkler Design and Materials Project was held at
1:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers on Friday, October 28, 2005. One bid was received
from Midland Implement, Inc. for $ 88,638.07. The design portion is $500.00 and the
material costs are $88,138.07.
Steve said that Midland Implement, Inc. is a wholesaler of pipe and they do the designs
for much less than an engineering company. The previous bid from Carl Thuesen, ASLA
was $14,500.00 for the design portion.
Steve explained that the material costs on this bid are high and he recommends rejecting
the bid but would like to go back and see if we can buy the design for $500.00 to
$600.00. He explained that due to the hurricanes, pipe prices have skyrocketed and this
bid was only good for three days. After the supply catches up with demand, the prices
should come down and we can look into material costs at a later date.
A new law has raised the requirement for bids from $25,000 to $50,000 so we may not
have to go out for bid.
Dick stated that if we are able to purchase the sprinkler design, he would then like to go
to the council for approval to go out for bid on the cemetery master plan.
Motion by Chuck, seconded Loyd to reject the bid and try to obtain the sprinkler design
from Midland Implement. Motion carried.
Dick briefed the Commission on a conversation he had with Commissioner Bill Kennedy.
A new military cemetery is being considered and it would require a community to donate
36 acres of land. Dick stated that we have adequate land for this and he feels this could
be the opportunity for our community to get a very nice cemetery. This project is funded
by the federal government and they would no doubt extend the improvements to the
remainder of the cemetery.
At some point in the future, Airport Road will be extended to Beartooth Highway, thus
eliminating the road in front of the cemetery. This would become just an access road
within the cemetery. In the future, we would like to acquire the pie shaped piece of land
which lies west of the current cemetery road.
Dick would like to get some information for Commissioner Kennedy to look at.
Future meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. to accommodate the members. Motion by
Loyd, seconded by Chuck to adjourn the meeting.
Meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Gabrian
Deputy Clerk
