The Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors would
like to inform you that the Board now has authority over the enforcement,
implementation, and adoption of the Uniform Standards under Administrative Rules of
Montana 8.94.3001 through 9.94.3003.
Professional Land Surveyors (PLS) are required by these administrative roles to include
specific information on filed survey documents. It has come to the attention of the Board
that some entities (i.e. counties, cities) are insisting that PLS provide additional
information on survey documents before filing can occur.
The Board is concerned that added informational requirements may raise potential
liabilities for the PLS. These added demands could be beyond their respective scope of
practice and cause them to face disciplina~ sanctions. For these reasons the Board is
requesting cooperation fi.om government entities having approval authority to not request
information other than what is required by administrative rule. If additional information
is something the authority desires, these items should be included as an attachment to the
survey documents.
