Preite, Director 406-841-2700 Contact: Victor Bjomberg Promotion Division 406-841-2795 Montana Commerce Department Grant Offers $200,000 For Tourism Infrastructure Projects; August 1, 2005 Application Deadline Helena, MT-June 21, 2005--Montana Commerce Department Director Anthony J. Preite announces that $200,000 in tourism "bed tax" funds are available for tourism-related projects through the agency's 2005 Tourism Infrastructure Investment Program (TIIP) Grants. The deadline for TIIP Grant applications is Monday, August 1, 2005. "We invite non-profit organizations or governments from across the state to use our TIll~ grants as part of the funding package they put together to improve Montana's visitor attractions and facilities," said Director Preite. "These tourism projects are an important part of maintaining and expanding the benefits tourism and visitor spending bring to our communities and businesses." The Commerce Department's TIIP Grants are for tourism-related "brick and mortar" projects sponsored and operated by non-profit organizations or local and tribal governments. Eligible projects include construction associated with building new and/or remodeling or preserving existing tourism and recreation attractions, historical sites and artifacts; costs associated with purchasing new and/or existing tourism and recreation attractions, historical sites and artifacts; and equipment purchased for specific tourism project operation. Since its creation in 1995, TIIP has invested more than $2 million in 'bed tax" funds into 44 projects in 32 communities across Montana. This investment has helped create over $24 million in new or improved tourism facilities in Montana. Preite invites Montana communities interested in assessing their tourism potential and identifying feasible projects that can strengthen the role of tourism in their area to apply for the 2005-06 session of the agency's Community Tourism Assessment Program (CTAP). The CTAP application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2005. Three communities will be selected for the 2005-06 program. Two CTAP participation slots will be reserved for rural communities, those less than 15,000 population, and one slot is reserved for an urban community. The fmal mix of urban and rural communities participating in the program will depend on the number of applications. "Thirty-five Montana communities have used the CTAP process to develop tourism development strategies that include improvements and creation of local attractions and visitor facilities," said Director Preite. "It has been a useful tool for these communities so we are encouraging others who want to assess their tourism potential to apply." CTAP is 10 month "self help" program offered Montana communities by MSU Extension, Montana Commerce Department and the University of Montana's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research. Local community action committees use the process and its facilitation services to analyze local resident attitudes about and interest in tourism, their community's tourism potential, gaps in visitor services, and the identification of affordable projects or actions that could strengthen the role of tourism in the local economy. 2005-2006 CTAP applications are available by calling Travel Montana, 406-841-2795, or by downloading the forms and guidelines from Travel Montana's Intranet site: http://travelmontana.state.mt.us/newsandupdates Forms, Applications and Regulations page. Lodging Facility Use Tax The Lodaina Facility Use Tax law specifies that approximately 25 percent of the Lodging Facility Use Tax proceeds that go to the Department of Commerce be returned on a pro-rated basis to six tourism regions and nine qualifying cities for their promotion as travel destinations or movie filming locations.
