M~ETING MINUTES OF AUGUST 12, 2004
Members present: Kate Stevenson, Marvin Carter, Gerry Ready, and Cai Cumin.
Members absent: Steve Klotz,,Donna Hirt, Cathy Black, and Robin Herman
Chairperson Kate opened the meeting and reminded the group that the main reason for our
existence was the insistence in all community surveys on the need for a swimming pool or
complex. We also have some funding based on the interest from the dollars given the City for
pool construction; something the first committee did not have. Kate also said that, from a recent
City-County meeting, Billings has offered its experience staffto us for any information they
could provide. We are now also able to tap the extensive resources.orNate Tubergen, and the
School District is interested in the project as evidenced by a representative on this Committee.
Members discussed things that had been done by the earlier Committee and the need to pursue
any and all grant funding, maybe ming the resources of BSEDA and the RC&D (of which Bob is
currently chair).
We need to explore the impact of swim meets on Laurel not only what they need as far as
facilities but the economic impact on the community. We need to fully explore the needed
facilities and secondary facilities in the future complex---considering everything from the impact
of humidity on bleachers to the number of lockers needed. Long-term maintenance by the City
is going to be a big issue.
We need to explore possible locations everything from the existing pool site in conjunction
with Ricci's lot to various park land such as West Park on 9th Street and other County parks
around the City. Other ideas at this early stage include South Park, the South School site, the
area between the existing ball fields in Thompson Park (relocating the fields is easier than
obtaining enough land for swim complex). Maybe even the existing tennis court area.
Future users include seniors and kids, and it was noted that a children's spray pool does not have
to be a direct part ora pool complex.
Next meeting will be the second Thursday, again at 5:00 in City Hall. We will try and get the
pool design-engineering firm from Billings to come, or Nate Tubergen, or Rocky Smith (to
discuss site availability).
