SAFETY MILL LEVY MARKETING
Doug stated he and Clete met with Dean Rankin about heading a marketing campaign to sell the
mill levy to the public. Dean said he would look at the committee material and get back with
them.
Doug said the public's main issue is how to figure out what amount will be added to their taxes.
Doug had a copy of a 2014 tax bill from the county. In the middle of the tax statement are the
words, Taxable Value, and below that are some figures and a Total. Multiply the Total amount
by .1263, that figure will be how much their taxes will increase for the year because of the Safety
Mill Levy. He showed an example: Taxable Value - Total 1873 x .1263 = $236.56 per year /
$19.72 per month. The above house has an appraised value of $138,740 and would sell in
today's market for around $200,000.
Discussion continued with putting together a brochure that would provide information to help
explain the importance of the mill levy to help serve and protect the citizens of Laurel. It was
suggested that it would be helpful if the fire department handed out brochures to the public at the
same time they are out selling July 4th raffle tickets. Brent Peters invited committee members to
attend the regular fire department meeting on Wednesday evening.
OTHER BUSINESS
Tom Nelson mentioned the closure of the underpass this summer because of maintenance. He
asked that this be put on the agenda for the next meeting of June 22°d
