Dear Mayor Olson and the City of Laurel:
The Yellowstone Historic Preservation Board (YH?B) received the special grant of $1,500.00
fi.om the Montana State Historic Preservation Office to perform a survey of historic Laurel
and create a walking tour pamphlet of downtown Laurel. The YI-I~B determined that
matching funds of $1,200.00 would be available fi.om the community to complete the
brochure by May 30, 2004. The YHPB, working in cooperation with the Western Heritage
Center, has already received $880.00 of matching in-kind and cash funds. Thanks to the
City of Laurel for their contribution of the $200.00 cash match. Supporters will be listed
on the back panel of the breehure and the YHPB web site.
Laurel Historic Downtown Survey and eight panel pamphlet
The YIIPB will do a historic survey of the downtown Laurel area with a focus on ten major
historic properties to be included in an eight panel, I 1 by 17, pamphlet which will share the
historic research, have a Laurel map, and include a historic overview of Laurel, Montana.
Heins Creative, with Joe Heins of Laurel, has been selected to produce the pamphlets. 1,000
pamphlets will be initially distributed. The information will also be included on the YI-IPB
Web site billings.corn Laurel does not presently have a single building on the National
Register of Historic Properties and the YHPB believes that this pamphlet can be used as a
guide for creating interest in preserving some of the historic character of downtown Laurel.
The information gathered fi.om the survey will also speed up the process for business people
wanting to learn more about a historic property in downtown Laurel.
Thank you for contribution to this project. The cheek can be made to:
