Dear Council Members
Laurel Js the closest city to our home, and as a result,~e spend a good deal of time and money
there. Quite literally, we frequent most all of your businesses throughout the course of a year. All
in all, Laurel is a proud, viable community.
However, I have a prediction about an upcoming problem for your city.
R~innirJg soon, them will be a drem~i~-escelagon in accidents at the
intersection of First Avenue South and Fourth Street SouthEast!
I am nora psychic, nordo I possess any clairvoyant abilities. I base this insight merely on the fact
that as soon as Ace Hardware opens, the traffic flow at this intersection will increase considerably.
As one comesto astop on Fourth Street SE (headed west) the motorist's line of sight is blocked
on both sides by moveable signs that set On the parking!
It is possible that many of these accidents could be avoided~
JUST MOVE THOSE SIGNS!
This particular intersection is not the only impediment to traffic accidents and problems that exists
in Laurel. _In fact, this seems to be a prevailing condition throughout your city - one that must
result in many problems and accidents for both your citizens and for all visitors.
For example, often - especially over weekends - them are numerous vehicles parked along the
street in front of Jan's IGA, making it very difficult to pull out onto First Avenue South. At the
Dragon Palace on West Main, a large shrub blocks the line of sight. On East Main, the speed limit
sign is so high off the ground that it is partially blocked by the trees.
I challenge each of you to ddve through Laurel, identifying how many of these problem areas exist
and then noting how many of them could be eliminated by simply removing obstacles, tdmming
trees or shrubs, or altering current parking allowances.
It is my sincere hope that these problems are tackled and dealt with soon.
Sincerely
Nancy McGrath
