Dear Commultity Supporter: The Laurel Chamber of Conmterce and the Friends of Canyon Creek are in the process of applying for the Montana Lewis and Clark Bicentemfial Grants Program. This isa grant that is aimed at helping communities that undertake Lewis and Clark -related projects in preparation for the 200-year a~miversar~ of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through Montana. This grant carries a maximum reward of $25,000 t~ ~ go towards Montana Lewis and Clark Bicentenmal projects. : The projects that Laurel would like to have are two to three interp;etive panels tdhng the story o? tli~ L~wis and Clark kistory in this ama, the h/story of the Nez Peree and the battle at Carryon Creek. and a panel with a map of where these two sites are. bmother pan of the project is to have directional sigm directing the traveler to the Canyon Creek Battle site. The interpretive panels will coincide with the ones thai Billings GlendJve mid Livingston now have. Those traveling will be able to aCCess the information in each of the communities while traveling this important trail. Thc Laurel Chamber of Commerce Lewis and Clark Bicentermial Committee and the Friends of Canyon Creek have partnered together on this project in order to get Laurel on board with the upcoming Bicentennial events. Please write a letter of support in our endeavor. Five points are being awarded for strong community , support. Points you may want to address in this letter are as follows (pick and choose as you see fit): · On going benefits that Laurel could acquire as a result of receiving this grant, · Totlrisll! POtential that Laurel WOuld ~eceive from having the panels as well as directional signs. · Why you think that howls an impottant time for La~el to iget on beard with Lewis and Clark. Bicente~mial projects. ~ ° The importance of having signage to Canyon Creek. A · The benefit of having beth the Lewis and Clark Trail and Nez Peree Trail go fl~rough Laurel and the importance of telling these two stories. · The need for those living here to be able to proudly display the history of these two events in Laurel. · Need for Laurel to compliment the panels in Billings and Livingst~ by being another impo~n{ stop for those traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail. C · Your own great ideas! Please address your letter to the Montana Lewis and Clark Bicantenmul Grm~ts Program, and marl it back~ to the Laurel Chamber of Commerca, 108 East Main, Laurel, MT 59044.
