MINUTES OF MAY 9, 2002
Members present: Olson, Johnson, Sttizich, Jonutis, McCann, Stevenson, Williams,
Smith, Baumgartner, and Cumin.
Minutes of the last meeting were approved with the correction noted that Kate and Diana
really were at the meeting.
Discussion on economic development and a sound economy as the basis for community
growth and the importance of doing community sustainment planning both in a
regulatory sense and by helping local businesses and industry. A1 Jones noted recently
for us that retail actually only constitutes 20% of a local economy.
Discussion of how to work with MRL both to get what the community wants such a some
sort of control over the south side of Main Street but also, considering MRL's importance
to our local economy, how Laurel can help them economically. MRL people to possibly
contact are Joe Gentry, leasing agent in Missoula, Gary Waddell, Yard Master in Laurel
for other suggestions, and Jack Gabrian, Safety Officer. We should also bring in Bob
Weims, Judy Goldsby, and A1 Jones.
Relevant ideas discussed included thanking MRL for removing the powerlines along the
Old Highway, the possibility of zoning the corridor between Main and the RR as Public,
getting BSEDA support, and what we can offer MRL as incentives (City water, waiving
system development fees, tax incentives, and the creation of a special development zone).
Cai to pursue issue along these lines and also to see ifMRL has an economic
development person. Cal to draft documents based on our Heritage Greenway Master
Plan for presentation at the eventual meeting with MRL--also prepare for presenting the
streetscape to the City Council for adoption.
