MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 9, 2000
Members present: Johnson, Stevenson, Baumgartner, Walker, Ricci, McCann, Easton,
Olson, and Cumin; also presem: Cossitt.
Minutes were approved as distributed with Diane noting that she really hadn't been at the
last meeting.
Cai had sent out ahead of time (along with the minutes) the Draft Non-Motorized
Transportation Plan 2000 from Missoula that Carol had obtained for us and also the Draft
Barriers Chapter of Laurel's Bicycle and Pedestrian Considerations prepared by John
Willi~uns. The Missoula Plan reflects where we want to get with our non-motorized
analysis and contains a lot of useful information.
Ken discussed the great pathway system in Missoula and that we should be able to
eventually provide a similar system. Key is funding and Missoula has built a $2.5
million pedestrian overpass over the railroad; we should be able to do this also as we
have emergency considerations here when the trains completely block north-south
movement. We should consider an at-grade crossing of the tracks.
Ken has coordinated us appearing before the High School Civics Classes, a program that
will consume two days and start with the showing of Subdivide and Conquer.
Cal passed out a draft set of questions for the planned telephone survey that Joe Floyd
from MSU-B will conduct. Members discussed the need for questions addressing how
Laurel people get to work, interest in carpools, and how to encourage fide-sharing.
Questions like, "How expensive does gas have to be before you will consider alternatives
to driving?" and "How much time do you spend in the car each day?" OC members will
review the proposed questionnaire and refine it at the December meeting.
John asked why our land coverage for this project doesn't include the airport, and the
Committee agreed it should. Cai will adjust the maps accordingly.
Bills listed on the agenda were approved for payment.
Cal showed the current production of Laurel's land use map in the GIS format and noted
that it is still being refined.
Next meeting is December 14th.
Meeting adjourned.
