Larry distributed copies of an executive summary of the status of the intake. The summary was
part of the Design Report that was put together for the regulating agencies. The last two pages of
the handout listed the architect's estimates, not the bid prices. The estimates are higher than
were expected. The architect's estimate on one of the pumps was $100,000 higher than we
expected. Originally, we estimated the costs at $1.2 million, but the cost estimate is now at $1.8
million. There is nothing elaborate in the design that could be cut. We will begin putting in the
temporary water on October 15th. The biggest increase is in the building, which is estimated to
cost more than $100,000. Future preventive maintenance needs are addressed in the project so
the city can perform the maintenance. Request for bids are out, and four local contractors have
shown interest. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for October l0th. Formal bids will be opened on
October 26th at 2:00 p.m. at HKM Engineering. A copy of the complete document is available
for review in Larry's office.
(NOTE: The date and time of the bid opening was incorrectly stated at this meeting. The bid
opening is scheduled for Friday, October 18, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall.)
Robin Herman, Marvin Carter, and Gerry Ready attended the meeting to discuss a direction for
the Swimming Pool Task Fome, which was formed two years ago. Donna Hirt and TenT Keller
also serve on the task force, and Steve Klotz attends as a staff member. Robin is the chairman,
but Mary was the spokesman.
Marv told the council that they are at a crossroads because they do not know which direction to
go. The committee was appointed two years ago, but now they need to know where the
swimming pool will be built and how much money will be spent. An architect talked to the
committee about swimming pools and sizes. There are some ideal spots in town that they would
really like to use. There is about $70,000 in the budget that could be used for phase 1 drawings,
but the committee wants more direction from the council at this point. The present pool might
last five more years and then the state will probably shut it down. If we show that something is
being done, maybe we could extend that time to six or seven years until the new pool is built.

There was further discussion regarding possible locations for the pool, a mill levy for the pool,
uses for the pool, informational meetings for the community, and a joint meeting with the school
district. It was suggested that the pool could be located outside the city limits so the county tax
base would be available.
After the discussion, Mayor Johnson stated that a meeting would be scheduled with the task
force soon, perhaps the week of October 14th.
Mayor Johnson thanked the task force for their efforts. He thinks that the community is vitally
interested in the pool and said that it is time to take a serious look at some direction. He thanked
the committee for attending the meeting and for their persistence in serving on the task force.
The meeting adjourned at 7:01 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Allen
Council Secretary
