EMERGENCY SERVICES COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 23, 2002
COUNCIL CHAMBERS
Members Present:
Dan Mcars, Charlie Pratt, Lauren Van Roekel, Ken Olson,
Dan Dart, Police Chief Musson, Ambulance Director Faught
and Fire Chief Ruff
Minutes of August 26, 2002 approved.
Fire Department
Terry said that two Deputy Fire Marshals were sent to the Advanced Arson Training
School in Denver. They have not officially presented their report to the Department.
Dan raised the issue of Laurel having to supply stand-by fire capabilities to area
agricultural concerns, via Yellowstone County Resolution No.2-58 from the 2002 fire
season that stated if area agricultural entities were going to burn fields and ditches when
the fire ban was in effect, local fire departments were to supply fire assistance. Ken said
that he had reservations with the county volunteering our services as it definitely could
have financial implications. Ken asked that we (Dan and Terry) find a conclusion to the
county resolution, as now is an ideal time to do so before the next fire season.
*NOTE: Dan spoke to Mayor Johnson who indicated that City Attorney Matt
Erekson was looking into the county resolution. Dan asked Matt if he had
sequestered comment from the county and he said that he was in the process of
doing so.
Ambulance Service
Jan indicated that parts for repair of Ambulance 1 were in. Jan said that Ambulance 1
would be out of commission for about two weeks. Jan also said that a rental ambulance
could be obtained for $100.00 per week. She was going to approach the Mayor about
having a rental in service.
Five Ambulance Service Crew members are going to Missoula to participate in the
Hospital Emergency Pediatric Care Workshop October 18-20, 2002.
Police Department
Rick said that the department hosted the Less Lethal Instructor Course. Three Laurel
officers are now certified to teach the course.
Two dispatchers are being sent to the TAC Conference in October. This course teaches
dispatch rules and guidelines.
Police Department continued
Officers Mark Guy and Chris Romero are going to attend the Homicide Investigation
School.
The School Resource Office, Jay Hatton, has taken receipt of a 2003 Ford Taurus
courtesy of Laurel Ford. Rick said that this is a wonderful example of a community
partnership in the scope of community policing.
Rick said that Beartooth Harley-Davidson would lease a motorcycle to the department for
free. The city would be obligated to outfit the bike with emergency apparatus as well as
outfitting the officer with safety equipment and communications capabilities.
Police Reserve class is beginning September 24th. Rick said that they have a good
number of interested parties wanting to serve on the Laurel Police Department Reserves.
Respectfully submitted,
Daniel Dart
