DEPARTMENT HEAD MEETING
SEPTEMBER 10, 2002 3:00 P.M.

OSHA Hazard Communication Standard draft · Bring comments on draft to next department head meeting
· Bring list of chemicals used in each department to next meeting
· Need MSDS for each chemical
· Identify all hazardous chemicals and quantities
· Information regarding chemicals can be downloaded from Intemet sites
· Chemicals are reactive or flammable
· Final product - book of MSDS and emergency procedures for every city building: FAP,
Library, City Hall, City Shop, WWTP and WTP
· MSDS provides a reference of all material found in the area because people have a right
to know
Update on storage lot · Surveyed for fence this week
· Surfacing is done
· Police Department will auction their surplus at a sheriff's auction.
· Surplus list should be complete soon
· Surplus resolution presented at September 24th Council Workshop
Communication about council workshop attendance
· Department heads should attend the council workshop if there is an issue to present,
unless he/she has spoken directly with the mayor and been excused from attending.
Other
Monthly reports · Mayor requested monthly numbers (calls of service) from fire department and ambulance
· Police department and PWD already submit
· Gives city council an idea of levels of activity and keeps them informed
· Comparison of current period and same period in previous year (September 2002 vs.
September 2001)
· Full reports still presented at end of year
· Give reports to Cindy to distribute

· Proposal from clerk-treasurer forthcoming
Walk Across America campaign at Graft Elementary · Students walk laps around the track in morning and during lunch
· Goal to accumulate enough mileage to reach New York and the World Trade Center on
September 11th
· Then to retrace their steps and be back to Laurel on October 2nd, National Walk to School
Day
· Invitation to walk with students on September 11th from 11:35 a.m. to 12:35

· First one shows two months; only one month after that
Virus warning · Technical Edge sent potential virus warning
· Continual updates done with Norton Anti-Virus

National Rural Water Association · Opportunity to attend meeting in Spokane
· Brad Krause wants to go
· $490 registration plus mileage and meals
WRDA Grant money · Corps will only pay on issued checks
· Deadline is September 15th
Committees · Mayor questioned SRO report to Emergency Services Committee
· Specific issues should be presented for committee review.
· If a report is not a specific issue, it should be presented to the council, not the committee.
· A copy of the report could be given to the committee after council presentation.
· Committees work on specific issues in order to make recommendations to the council.
· Mayor to contact Nancy Singleton regarding joint meeting regarding school zone,
transportation issue, and SRO program.
Fire Department · Fireworks on September 1 lth
· Six salute fireworks sent above the City of Laurel to signify the critical times of 9/11/01

· Four firemen and piece of equipment to participate in parade in Billings on September
11th
Discussion - consolidation of services · Yellowstone County Local Emergency Plarming Committee (LEPC) hosting tabletop
exercise
· October 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at Billings Clinic Conference Center
· Each department should be represented
· City of Laurel needs to participate in discussions
· Strategic lack of communications should be addressed
