Cathy reported that Steve Klotz met with Bob and Don Schessler regarding land
acquisition. At the previous Cemetery Board meeting, it was the consensus of the board
to try and buy the entire portion, noah to Airport Road. Schesslers are willing to sell us
20.431 acres for $2,500 an acre with the total land cost being $51,077.50. They want this
amount from the sale so the city would pay the legal fees and the cost of having it
surveyed. This includes Tract A, Tract B, and all but 2.06 acres of Tract C. The 2.06
acres in the northeast comer was sold to the Masons.
Chuck spoke in favor of purchasing this land. He stated the city has been working on this
for many years. He gave a brief background on how things have transpired over the
years.
Discussion followed and Dan felt that this is a good investment for the city. It was felt
that we are doing something good for the future of Laurel and no one will have to worry
about cemetery land for generations to come. It was stated that it is more feasible and
economical to maintain one cemetery. Lauren said it is an opportunity we cannot pass
up.
More discussion regarding a sprinkler system and the feasibility of using wells for
irrigation.
Cathy related that Steve indicated it would take years to fill in the gully to where this
would actually be usable.
Lee stated that we might want to change our thinking about the layout of this new area.
We do not have to continue in the same manner of layout as the other sections and we
may want to eventually get an architect to design this area.
Motion by Loyd Shay to purchase 20.431 acres of land for $51,077.50 with the city
paying the legal and surveying fees, seconded by Dan Dart. Motion carried.
Mark reported back that he spoke to a contractor and it would cost approximately $ 8.00
a foot to put in curb and gutter on a new road base.
Dick questioned what the city's response would be to the public who wants to know what
we will do with this land. It was stated that we will continue to rent it as farmland and
this would generate revenue.
Mark commented that individuals have worked for years on acquiring this land and we
now realize just how hard it has been.
The meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Gabrian
