Members Present: Doug Poehls Clete Knaub Richard Dawes Pat Kimmet Bruce McGee Others Present: Rick Musson Brent Peters Jan Faught SAFETY MILL LEVY UPDATE There was discussion on the Safety Mill Levy proposal. Clete referenced the police department saying there is a need to have two officers on duty to ensure coverage per shift. If any cutting is done it would have to be miscellaneous items, ammunition or computers. Pat Kimmet asked if the committee has any other options to help fund the departments if the mill levy fails. Rick stated his department has used COP Grants over the years and isn't in favor of grants. For instance at the end of a grant, he was going to have to let an officer go, but then an officer quit the department on his own. Discussion continued on statistics pertaining to Police, Fire, and Ambulance. All three said they do have statistics for calls, etc. Bruce McGee added information pertaining to tax increases on homes for $100,000.00 and $200,000.00 in Laurel. He pointed out taxes are on assessed values. There are more homes in the median home value of$160,000.00 to $180,000.00. The main concern is promoting the mill levy to the public. The committee suggested possibly using another source outside of city hall. Educating the public on what is important for the safety of the community is needed. There are a couple more months to come up with ideas. It was suggested to invite Heidi and Shirley to the next meeting in February for suggestions on what options there are going to be. Respectfully submitted, Neva Hall Secretary
