As many cities and counties know, there have been numerous viral and bacterial outbreaks in the United States during the last few years. Many of these outbreaks have killed several hundred people and overloaded medical and government service capacities. Consequently; municipalities have been developing their own emergency management Plans to coPe with such disasters or they have been coordinating their efforts with the Defense Depa, tment' and the Domestic Response Program. The Center for Disease Control and the Department of Health and Human Services has issued the call for intergoveramental cooPeration with medical personnel to assess all levels of governmental preparedness to deal with such events, whether man- made or of natural origin. This survey is university-sponsored and part of the attempt to create a database on municipal preparedness. The survey is enclosed and should take less than 5 minutes to complete. Information is confidential. A postage paid envelope has been provided for your Convenience. A response by April 15 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your cooperation. sincerely; Dr. Barbara L.
