Duke Nieskens
Duke Nieskens showed an example of a pipe that was repaired with a link pipe-grouting patch
and he explained the process. With this patch, a break could be repaired in a couple of hours,
as opposed to replacing the line. The cost for two stainless steel patches would be about
$5,400, while replacing the line would cost about $60,000. Duke presented video of the 18"
sewer line located at the BN road south of Juniper. It was determined that this location was
the reason for the recent high infiltration at the sewer plant, and the break in the line needs to
be repaired soon.
Larry stated that the contractor would start installing the service lines to the restrooms at the
soccer field on the 18th. The grant application has been submitted. An $80,000 FEMA
Project Impact Grant application has been made for the intake problem.
Mark stated that the Insurance Committee is considering available options regarding the
increases. He thanked Bud, Ken, and Mary for their help on the committee.
Ken Olson, Rick Musson, and Chuck Rodgers recently met with two representatives from the
Olympic Torch Committee. Ken informed the council that the Olympic torch is scheduled to
be in Laurel for thirty-six minutes on Monday, January 28th. For security reasons, the route
will not be disclosed. The committee encouraged the City of Laurel to plan some festivities
for the occasion. Pre-event information will be available soon. Ken plans to discuss the
Olympic torch festivities at the joint meeting with the school district that is scheduled for
August 6th at 7:30 p.m.
Gay mentioned graffiti on the outside of a vacant house and a vehicle at Valley Drive and 13t~
Street. The vehicle was removed today and the rest of the situation is being addressed.
Smokey stated that Laurel should approach the swimming pool situation like Roundup did.
Mayor Rodgers stated that the Pool Task Force is considering some options.
