RE. 2002 WORKERS' COMPENSATION PROGRAM DIVIDEND
It has been sixteen years since Montana cities and towns, under the authority of the Montana
Interlocal Cooperation Act, joined forces to form the Montana Municipal Insurance Authority
(MMIA). During those sixteen years the MMIA Board of Directors and staff has worked diligently
to develop an organization that services a broad range of insurance needs of our 119 members.
We are pleased to share the continued success of the Workers' Compensation Program with its
membership. During the life of this Program we have seen significant shifts in all of the
insurance markets, each experiencing difficulties ranging from availability of coverage to
skyrocketing premiums. The MMIA was created to, among other things, proude Montana cities
and towns with continuous insurance coverage in the face of the changing markets. As we begin
to experience the effects of the events of 9/11, the benefits of participating in MMIA Programs
become increasingly apparent.
At the 2001 MMIA Annual Meeting, Acting Board Chair Kathy Denke announced a $1 million
dividend to members of the Workers' Compensation Program. Attached is a check br your
municipality's share of that dividend. These payments were approved by your Board of Directors
in accordance with the Program Agreement that alloys for the allocation of unencumbered fund
balances to the membership. Documents supporting the calculations br each member are also
attached.
This dividend is made with the appreciation of the MMIA staff and Directors for all that each of
you have done to adopt effective risk management practices and work with your employees to
promote safety. This is the sixth distribution for the MMIA Workers' Compensation Program.
Bringing the total amount of the dividend distributions, beginning in 1996, to $7.98 million.
This Program belongs to you, the members of the MMIA. Your commitment and diligence have
made it work, allowing us to return nearly $8 million over the past six years.
Congratulations and thanks for your continued support.
