CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
JANUARY 2, 2002 6:30 P.M.

Mayor Rodgers wished everyone a happy new year.
Terry Ruff stated that Miles Walton and Blaine Grossman are retiring from the Fire Department. The
department will be advertising this month to fill the vacancies.
Jan Faught informed the council that Care 1 has been out of service since December 14th. An executive
from the Ford Motor Company is scheduled to be in Laurel this week to determine the problem.
Rick Musson mentioned that Dustin Black will begin on January 7th, and Erin Popp will begin on January
14~h, pending appointment and completion of testing. Both officers will begin fourteen weeks of field
training.
Larry McCann stated that preparations have been made for an emergency at the river. Cleaning the intake
fight before Christmas did not work, and there are great concerns regarding the slush ice in the river.
Cenex is now on treated water full time. Pumps are on standby and piping is complete in case of an
emergency. COP Construction would be available with a track hoe and bulldozer within four hours of an
emergency. Larry estimated a cost of $20,000 to $25,000 to complete the emergency measures. The river
was at a record Iow for this date.
The study from HKM for the $400,000 grant from the Corps of Engineers should be available by
February 1a. The city is presently in a good position to receive a $500,000 CDBG grant.
Matt Erekson explained the procedure regarding nomination and election of City Council President and
Vice-President. Matt distributed copies of the procedure between the pre-council and council meetings.
Mary Embleton mentioned that the audit went smoothly and the auditors completed their work on
Thursday, December 20th. Mary reminded new officers to fill out paperwork in her office soon.
