HomeMy WebLinkAboutCemetary Commission Minutes 05.29.2014 CEMETERY COMMISSION MINUTES Thursday, May 29, 2014 5:30 P.M. at City Hall MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Nelson, Chairman Dick Fritzler Chuck Rodgers Lee Barndt Mark Mace Wally Hall OTHERS PRESENT: Cathy Gabrian Tom opened the meeting and there was no public in attendance. Sprinkler System: We have $113,000.00 in the CIP Fund and no additional money was budgeted in FY 14 -15. Tom suggested we go out for RFQ and see what happens. Previously, the RFQ included both parts of the project and smaller contractors were unable to do the pipe work. Since that portion is done, we may get additional contractors to bid on it. A motion was made by Chuck, seconded by Wally, to go out for bid for a sprinkler system with modifications as Kurt had previously stated. Motion carried. No decision was made on the VFD or rewinding the pump. If we are able to do the sprinkler system, both would need to be done. The rewind cannot be done until after the watering season. Setting priorities in order of importance for future cemetery needs: The committee reviewed the Cemetery Improvement Proposal that Kurt handed out at a previous meeting. • We have had no contact with the county regarding the drain pipe. We need to find out exactly what commitment was made to extend the pipe. It was suggested we speak with Gerald Lyons, Cemetery Manager for Yellowstone National Cemetery. Tom will follow up on this. • We do not have money to fix the roads properly. Tom suggested using millings to repair the roads. Mayor Mace suggested having Kurt talk to someone who is in charge of the millings on the Highway 312 project. Tom said other options to consider are a bond issue or a cemetery district. • The city crew will pour the remaining `unknown' markers next week. • There was discussion about marking the sections and the roads to help people find grave locations. There is information in the handout from Ronald Yates about improving your existing grave location system. • In regard to opening additional sections, Cathy would like to open the last two rows in Section Q of the Catholic Cemetery. The crew would need to water and mow the area and put markers in the ground. • There was discussion about putting the road in between Sections A and I. The Master Plan shows a road in this location. • Wally previously spoke about having the National Guard do dirt work for us. He spoke to John Walsh but has never heard back from him. It was suggested that we write directly to the National Guard and request their help. • Tom will make a priority list that can be brought forward each meeting and modified if necessary. Update on tree removal: Kurt told Cathy the tree will be removed and trimming of trees in the cemetery will be done by June 23`d. Cemetery Commission Page 2, May 29, 2014 Review Ronald Yates handout: Tom said there are ideas in the handout that we can incorporate in our cemetery. The city planner is getting a GPS system and we can see if it could be used in the cemetery. Other: Cathy had a request to bury ashes in the west side of Section B. We had this area imaged and it did not show any graves. It was discussed at a previous meeting to use it for cremation burials. A motion was made by Chuck, seconded by Wally, to open the west side of Section B for cremation burials. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 6:44 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Cathy Gabrian Ii
