HomeMy WebLinkAboutCemetary Commission Minutes 03.20.2014 CEMETERY COMMISSION MINUTES
Thursday, March 20, 2014
5:30 P.M. at City Hall
MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Nelson, Chairman Dick Fritzler
Chuck Rodgers Lee Barndt
Mark Mace
OTHERS PRESENT: Cathy Gabrian Kurt Markegard
Tom opened the meeting and there was no public in attendance.
Kurt spoke on projects in the cemetery:
• Castlerock Excavating will finish installing the new line in the next couple of weeks.
• The VFD will cost $10,000.
• It will cost approximately $8,000 - $9,000 to rewind the pump.
• We will have about $52,000 left in the CIP Fund after paying Castlerock, doing the VFD and
rewinding the pump.
• The sprinkler system came in at $152,000. The 2014 -15 budget process is just getting started and
Kurt asked for $85,000 to finish up the sprinkler system. It is too early to determine whether it
will be in the budget but we will know more in 3 -4 weeks.
• Kurt asked Duffy with Castlerock for a bid to lay the sprinkler.
• It will cost $8,000 for our portion of the drain culvert that we are splitting with the county. The
county wants to get the work done this spring so they can turn the Veteran's Cemetery over to the
federal government by May.
Additional projects:
• Split Sections A & H in half.
• Set marker caps to indicate rows.
• Make section marker signs.
• Fill area over drain culvert — need to rent machinery to move dirt at cost of $1,000 for a week.
• Road deterioration due to bad winter. Kurt said we may never have the funding to redo the roads.
Discussed whether millings would work verses leaving it gravel. Chuck said the main road has
been gouged out by some type of machinery.
Kurt said we need to wait to see what happens with the budget. If we are unable to get funding for the
sprinkler for another couple of years, we could hold off doing the VFD and rewinding of the pump.
Kurt asked Shirley and Heidi about the possibility of going out for a bond for the cemetery. A park
district will be on the ballot this spring and if it passes, it should free up some funding in the General
Fund. If it does pass, it would affect the 2015 -16 budget.
Chuck requested that a 25 year old spruce tree be removed in Section B. The roots are lifting the
headstone.
Motion by Lee, seconded by Dick to remove the spruce tree in Section B. Dick said the stump should be
ground out. Kurt said we have winter kill in the cemetery and the man who trims our trees has a stump
grinder. A vote was taken on the motion. Motion carried.

Bud Arnold is retiring after 21 years with the city. He has been at the cemetery since 2006. Bud's job
was posted within in union but has not been awarded yet.
The crew has been busy this winter with snow removal but Kurt will have them start working on making
and pouring more headstones for Section A.
Cathy received an informational packet in the mail from Ronald L. Yates. Copies of the packet were
distributed and members asked to read through the information. It will be discussed at the April meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
