HomeMy WebLinkAboutSwimming Pool Committee Minutes 12.20.2000City of Laurel Swimming Pool Task Force Meeting Minutes 12/20/2000 Members Present: Jerry Rittle, Robin Herman, Mary Carter, Dan Dart, Donna Hirt Absent: Susie Wester Others Present: Mayor Rodgers Mayor Rodgers introduced members of the committee to each other. Mayor Rodgers asked for nominations for committee chair. Mary Carter said that as he and Dan Dart were members of the School Board and City Council respectively, it might appear to the public that the swimming pool project was a School Board or City Council project if either chaired the committee. Robin Herman agreed to co-chair the committee. Susie Wester was appointed the other co-chair by the committee. Mayor Rodgers gave a brief overview of the current swimming pool situation. He said that the City Council appropriated money for the sandblasting and repair that was currently taking place on the swimming pool. He also mentioned that there was a "nest egg" of money left to the city through an endowment and that we already had a start compiling money to begin the project. Dan Dart referenced the Needs Assessment Study that was recently conducted in Laurel. Dan said that recreational opportunities for teenagers ranked in the top (10) ten needs by survey respondents. Mary Carter mentioned several sites that we could consider in building a new swimming pool. Those locations included: the site of the existing pool, in Thompson Park near the football field and the location where the football team practices next to the High School. Mary also mentioned that the School Board was in negotiation with a private landowner to purchase 48 acres on West Maryland Lane. If the School Board was able to negotiate an acceptable price on the property, Mary said that we might consider building the swimming pool at the new High School. There was a roundtable discussion regarding Community Involvement, Funding Sources and information provided from other cities/sites where new pools were recently constructed. Community Involvement: (organizations that could be solicited for support); Yellowstone Bank, Laurel Federal CU, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Eagles Club,. Page 2 Swimming Pool Task Force Meeting 12/20/2000 Jaycees, Park City, Columbus, Bridger, Joliet, Fromberg, PTA, School District and Laurel Businesses Funding Sources: Montana Legislators in Washington D.C., federal programs through the YMCA (US Swimming), Endowment Funds, a potential check-off contribution on City of Laurel Water Bills, Montana Rail Link (Dennis Washington), Cenex and the Bill Gates Foundation. Site information; (other towns or locations that have constructed new pools recently); Bozeman, Shelby, Roundup and Rocky Mountain College. Minutes Submitted by:
