Swimming Pool Task Force Meeting Minutes
12/20/2000
Members Present: Jerry Rittle, Robin Herman, Mary Carter, Dan Dart, Donna Hirt
Absent: Susie Wester
Others Present: Mayor Rodgers
Mayor Rodgers introduced members of the committee to each other. Mayor Rodgers
asked for nominations for committee chair. Mary Carter said that as he and Dan Dart
were members of the School Board and City Council respectively, it might appear to the
public that the swimming pool project was a School Board or City Council project if
either chaired the committee. Robin Herman agreed to co-chair the committee. Susie
Wester was appointed the other co-chair by the committee.
Mayor Rodgers gave a brief overview of the current swimming pool situation. He said
that the City Council appropriated money for the sandblasting and repair that was
currently taking place on the swimming pool. He also mentioned that there was a "nest
egg" of money left to the city through an endowment and that we already had a start
compiling money to begin the project.
Dan Dart referenced the Needs Assessment Study that was recently conducted in Laurel.
Dan said that recreational opportunities for teenagers ranked in the top (10) ten needs by
survey respondents.
Mary Carter mentioned several sites that we could consider in building a new swimming
pool. Those locations included: the site of the existing pool, in Thompson Park near the
football field and the location where the football team practices next to the High School.
Mary also mentioned that the School Board was in negotiation with a private landowner
to purchase 48 acres on West Maryland Lane. If the School Board was able to negotiate
an acceptable price on the property, Mary said that we might consider building the
swimming pool at the new High School.
There was a roundtable discussion regarding Community Involvement, Funding Sources
and information provided from other cities/sites where new pools were recently
constructed.
Community Involvement: (organizations that could be solicited for support); Yellowstone
Bank, Laurel Federal CU, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Rotary Club, Eagles
