Information about the Assessment Center in Billings will be put on the web-site and in the next brochure as these services are available to Laurel residents. Justice Coalition reported on their projects including game nights at the elementary school, middle school activities, the Bigs and Little program pairing high school students with elementary students and the Conference Committee. Dave Ward reported that he had recently attended a meeting of the International Chiefs of Police. and left information about current projects and practices to be distributed to members. Joe Floyd discussed methods of obtaining input from students. Possibilities were: a telephone survey, mailed surveys, surveys administered on site, focus groups and large group meetings. Pros and cons of each method were discussed. Ideally, focus groups would be held to help identify issues, a survey would be prepared based on those issues and then focus groups would meet again to hear and discuss survey results. Price for focus groups, surveys of selected grades, processing the information and then presenting it at a town meeting would be about $10,000. Utilizing Dr. Floyd for only part of the process or reducing the steps in the process would reduce the cost. Possible methods of financing a survey were discussed and included donations from local businesses and grants form the Board of Crime Control. Dr.. Floyd also presented information about the Social Norms Project being carried out by Dr. Jeff Linkenbach of MSU - Bozeman. This is a best practices model which has been shown to reduce alcohol consumption by giving people information about the true amounts that others in their community drink. This amount is usually less than is assumed. Carolyn will contact Dr. Linkenbach to ask for more information about his project. Carolyn Boyd copies to: Henman, Olson, Johnson, Carter, McMilin, Rodgers
