Rick discussed the Y2K issue. He stated that his department would be of normal staffing with additional
personnel available. Rick informed the committee that the announcement of the hire will be brought
before the next council meeting. The jail issue was brought up. Norm moved and Smokey seconded to
support the closing of the jail. Ken stated that MMIA representative Bob Worthington stated that the city
would incur less liability with the jail closed. Discussion followed. The motion passed unanimously.
Fire
Jira reported that one fireman resigned and that he expected to start the selection process in January of
2000. The Y2K issue was brought up. Jim has tried the auxiliary generator at the FA]? Complex and it is
working as expected. Becker Fire Co. has checked on the chips for the fire apparatus and they expect no
problems. Jim reported that he will be available at the FAP Complex in case of problems. The fire
department personnel will be called to the hall if necessary. Jim made a very complete report on the fire
deparm~ent's responsibility in case of Y2K problems.
Ambulance
Jan reported that both ambulances will be ready and four crew members will be available on New
Year's Eve night. She reported that one extra has been assigned if needed to the EOC. The new
ambulance went on line December 10. Jan reported that there is a radio problem and that they are in the
process of fixing it. Jan reported that Wheel Coach has offered the course of Wheel Coach Technician,
Certified to a Laurel ambulance staffmember. The committee recommended that she obtains more
information and report back to us. Jan asked about the maintenance and training positions for the
ambulance department. She stated that it will not put a burden on the budget. Norm moved and Jack
seconded to give a favorable pass for the h'aining and maintenance position and that Jan talk to the Budget
and Finance Committee. Motion passed. Jan reported that a First Respondcr course will be available in
January and an EMT course will start the last week of February. She stated, as a prior practice, it was
advertised that if an individual paid for the course and was hired as a city employee, they would be
reimbursed. She wanted to know if we wanted to continue that offer. The committee agreed to this. Jan
reported that Lord's Video building is for sale for $162,000.
Ken asked if thcre were any comments fi.em the committee. There were none. Ken asked ifthcre were any
comments fi.om the audience and there were none. Meeting was adjourned.
