CITY OF LAUREL TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENT PROJECT
(ISTEA) FUNDING PROGRAM
OVERVIEW
The 1991 Federal Intermodal Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) provides local
communities money for transportation-related projects These funds are administered by
the Montana Department of Transportation to communities like Laurel on a per capita
basis, and the program is scheduled for six years. Laurel presently has approximately
$65,014 to its credit and--if everything goes as planned--will get an annual addition of
approximately $33,000 for another four years. Laurel must match these federal funds with
cash amounting to approximately 13.42 percent of a project's cost. In other words, to
match the $65,014, Laurel must come up with $8,725. Non-cash in-kind contributions or
the use of other federal monies as match must be approved by the Federal Highway
Administration. Laurel projects must be approved and sponsored by the City of Laurel,
and all federal and state non-discrimination and Americans with Disabilities Act provisions
apply.
ELIGIBLE PROJECTS
Projects smaller than $10,000 will not be considered because of the administrative cost
involved in processing the application. Projects may be phased over the six-year life of the
funding program.
Only the following are eligible for funding under the federal and state guidelines:
-facilities for pedestrians and bicycles
-acquisition of scenic easement and scenic or historic sites
-scenic or historic highway programs
-landscaping and other scenic beautification
