Chief Langve, I apologize for missing your emails recently. I have been having IT issues and things are
crazy this time of year with the Legislature in session.
Therefore, due to my job, my hearing schedule, and the fact that I have been elected as the President
of the Metra Park Advisory Board for the next two years, I am going to have to tender my resignation
as a City of Laurel Police Commissioner. I am sorry I don’t have the time to do my civic duty to the
citizens of Laurel for the next two years. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you all and I
appreciate all the efforts of everyone involved.
Respectfully Submitted,
Steven K. Hurd

Alrighty this is a second attempt. Below is a copy of my original email. Dan had replied that he
is available any date in January.
Greetings all,
First of all, a welcome and thank you to Dan and Irv for stepping forward to be on the
Commission. We have three candidates that have successfully passed the background portion
of the hiring process. We currently have one vacant position to fill.
In the past, the Police Commission and staff have convened for the interview portion of the
hiring process. This has been challenging to coordinate with all the scheduling conflicts;
Commissioners have expressed concerns about the amount of time it can take from their
personal and professional schedules.
I propose a meeting with the Police Commission where the candidates’ applications, interview
questions / responses, and background investigation are presented. Commissioners would
then be able to sign off on candidates to form the hiring pool at that time. This would provide
the Commissioners with more information about the candidates and satisfy their statutory
requirements. I reference the Montana Police Officer Standards and Training’s (P.O.S.T) own
Administrative Rules of Montana (A.R.M.) section 23.13.801 (2) (f) which requires that the
individual be of good moral character as determined through a thorough background check.
This process has been implemented in other municipalities within the state and would greatly
shorten the time commitment from the Commission.
I appreciate your timely response as we urgently need to fill this vacant position.
Respectfully,
Chief Stanley J Langve
