Training Officer Matt Hoppel presented the third phase of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department
presentation. Doug Fox and Kent Kulesa are the Assistant Training Officers for the department.
The department's Mission Statement is "to provide all members of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department
the highest quality training to obtain the goals that are desired by each member of the department."
Training sessions are held one to three Wednesdays of every month, with some additional weekend
training available. Firemen are required to obtain a yearly minimum of 30 training hours from the 240
training hours offered by the department each year. The department averages 80 hours of training per
person, and the department's volunteers donate a total of 2,300 training hours per year.
Topics offered for training include structural firefighting, fire officer training, rescue training, mutual aid
industrial firefighting, emergency vehicle operations, special areas of concern, and engineer training.
The City of Laurel is a Class 5 city and its ISO rating saves taxpayers as much money as possible. The
ISO rating is determined by the department's training, equipment and facilities.
The department uses the new multimedia projector to provide computer interactive training for the
volunteers. The Essentials of Firefighting Curriculum and Study Guide topics include hazardous
materials, incident command, initial reports, and pump operation. Training is also received by recreating
an incident through post incident analysis and incident command.
The LVFD presents fire prevention programs to the public and the local schools.
Matt invited the council to attend the department's training meetings at any time.
Gay Easton thanked Matt for his presentation and thanked the department for its dedication and services.
The meeting adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Allen
City Council Secretary
