(A list of the public in attendance is attached.) 1. Public Comments — Rich St. John, Billings Chief of Police and John Thompson, Billings Parks Superintendent, spoke about their experience with the skate park in Billings. They both spoke in favor of public skate parks. Very little trouble since the skaters police themselves and take care of the park. 2. American Legion — Richard Klose, representing the Laurel American Legion chapter, offered the donation of a new flag pole for the baseball field at Thompson Park. The cost of the pole and its installation is $3,000 paid for by the Laurel American Legion. The Board thanked the Legion for their generosity. Chuck Dickerson asked Mr. Klose who would remove the old flagpole after the new one was installed. Mr. Klose did not know. 3. Skate Park — Hunter Stokes presented a Power Point about why Laurel needs a skate park. He asked for guidance from the Park Board as to how to proceed with building a skate park, when a location has not yet been settled. (Hunter and his committee had done a survey of residents of Kiwanis Park — this park was recommended by Kurt Markegard, Public Works Director) 4. More Public comments — Mark Mace asked for opponents or proponents of the skate park. Several residents of the Kiwanis Park area presented comments that the park was overused plus vandalism, littering, late hours, lack of police protection were concerns. They felt a skate park would be better managed in a centralized commercial area and not a residential area. 5. Chuck Dickerson moved (2 by Amy Pollock) that the Park Board ask the Council to approve a skate park provided a suitable location becomes available. This passed 5 -0.
