Subject: Community Transportation Safety Planning and Development Assistance
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is requesting letters of interest from
communities in Montana interested in developing a Community Transportation Safety Plan (CTSP).
MDT is offering technical and financial assistance for the development of community safety plans
and requires no local matching funds. The purpose of a CTSP is to identify behavioral and
infrastructure issues related to transportation safety and to develop strategies to address them.
Development of a CTSP will enable local governments and residents to examine crash data to
identify specific safety issues unique to their area and determine crash- reduction strategies. The
success of these plans requires local commitment and coordination with community partners
experienced in the four "E's" of transportation safety: Education, Enforcement, Emergency Medical
Services, and Engineering.
If your community is interested in developing a safety plan, please submit a written request signed
by the Mayor and Chairperson of your City Commission highlighting safety concerns in your
community. This request should include the identification of a local government representative,
preferably from the local Planning Department, to serve as the project sponsor. The project sponsor
will be the point of contact for the safety planning process and will be responsible for leading the
plan implementation, tracking and reporting progress. Please include a minimum of three letters of
support and commitment from key safety stakeholders representing the four "E's" in your
community.
The enclosed brochure provides more information on the program. Additional information and plan
example are available at: http: / /www.mdt.mt.gov/ safetv / plans- programs/community- plans.shtml
Letters of interest are due by August 6, 2012, to Pam Langve- Davis, Statewide & Urban Planning,
Montana Department of Transportation, P.O. Box 201001, Helena, MT 59620 -1001 or contact her at
(406) 444 -7646 with any questions about the application process.
