LONGWORTH, LIBRARIAN October 19, 1966 Mrs. O.K. Chapman Laurel, Montana Dear Mrs. Chapman, " Thank you for sending me the signed agreement -and the certification forms. We shall process one claim now for $520.00 and the balance in January, 1967. I am enclosing your copy of the agreement signed by me. All good wishes. Sincerely, Mrs. Ruth O. Longworth, Librarian ROL:aac The Laurel Library Board announced today that the Laurel Public Library will be participating in the demonstration of county-wide library service to be known as the YELLOWSTONE FEDERATION OF LIBRARIES. The demonstration sponsored under the Library Services Act but distributed by the Montana Library Commission, will operate through the Spring of 1968, at which time supporters of county -ride library service will peti- tion the County Commissioners for the establishment of county library service in order to continue with local support. The purpose of the demonstration is to introduce to the public and the commis- sioners some of the advantages of county ►ide cooperation in library service before they are asked to make any decisions regarding financial support. While the cities of Laurel and Billings will be cooperating in providing the service neither community will be afi'edted by any proposed change in support at the time the State withdraws, since both communities are already taxed for library service. Effective September 15, 1966, Laurel will be opening its library doors to county residents, free of charge and in return will be receiving many more books from the State Library. There will no longer be a charge for membership cards and fines will not be charged for normal overdues during the period of the demonstration. Additional shelving is to be built and a telephone will - be installed. Though a hook -up with the Billings Public Library it will be possible to give much more rapid reference and inter - library loan service. A bookmobile from the headquarters in Billings will visit the library twice a month --on the FIRST AND THIRD TUESDAYS. It will be at the laurel library from 3 P.1 . to 5 P.M. on those days, It will be carrying approximately 1,800 new books from which Library patrons can select what they want and check out through the Laurel Public Library. Funds for the telephone and shelving will come through a grant from the State Library s* and the State will also reimburse the city for anticipated fines and subscriptions during the demonstration period. The Laurel Library Board will be meeting from time to time with the State Librarian and representatives from Billings concerning the services offered by-both libraries. It is expected that additional services will be added as the Federation begins its actual demonstration operation. The "bookmobile will make its first stop at Laurel on Tuesday, September 20th.
