The Trustees and Friends Division of the Montana Library Association
met at 8:00 A.Y. Saturday ray 8, during the MLA Conference. Judy Thomas
presiding.
Lawrence Maxwell reported on the Alta Conference he attended in
Minneapolis, recommending that every library should have these
books: "The Library Trustee" by Virginia Young (proceeds go to
trustee organization) and " Administration of the mall Public Library"
by Dorothy Sinclair. The conference dealt with trustee education and
presented the challenge of conducting a workshop in Montana. With the
guide -lines given, it could be done on a regional or mini - workshop
basis. Lawrence Maxwell urged the use o" a professional to aid in
planning, and suggested the use of local resource people, as
policies evolve.
The workshop on the new "Manual for Trustees and Friends" was well -
attended, and the manual is to be printed, and available to all
trustees in the state. The format will be loose -leaf, so that local
or other material may be added. Broad Valley Federation has given
11000 toward it's printing, and Golden Plains Federation will buy 40
copies. Other libraries are urged to buy manuals for their hoards.
Members of the manual committee will be presenting the manual to
Federation meetings this fall.
The decision on the recommendation of the Library Development Committee
to dissolve the Trustees & Friends Division has been postponed for a year.
Officers for 1982 -3 will be Lawrence Maxwell, President,
Johnette Grefe, President- elect, and Gwen Nottingham, Secretary.
For the 1983 MLA Conference in Billings, a workshop on Trustee
Responsibility and Involvement has been proposed, (legal responsibility
being implied).
There is the tendency of Boards of Trustees to be interested only
in their own libraries; when returning to trustee meetings remind
them that trustee involvement in state activities eventually benefits
each local library. Possibly a letter to individual boards would help
in this matter.
Finally, efforts will be made to organize a legislative day for the
!'LA Board during the upcoming legislative session.
