BOARD OF TRUSTEES February 11, 2003
Attending -Peg Freund(presiding), Katherine Kucera, Bonnie Latham, Gail Brice,
Clara Killebrew, and Peggy Arnold
Minutes -read and approved as corrected
Correspondence -We have been asked to update our directory information for the
State Library. The legislature rolled back all state agency budgets to
the FY 2000 base level budget. This reduces the State Library
budget by an additional $339,739.
Circulation- Traffic for January 2003 was 1,534 up 6% from January
2002. Circulation for January 2003 was 3,101 down 8% from January
2002.
Old Business -We discussed the budget, advertising and interviewing
for the open position, substitute library position, cable modem Internet
access, and Friends of the Library.

New Business -The LGFW will host a play and Easter Egg hunt on
April 16 at 1 p.m. The annual MLA conference will be in Butte April
23 -27. Information for the next Laurel Voice will be due March 3.
More quilts will be displayed sometime soon.

Computer skills -one point each for having some skills, use email, word processing or
inventory, research or database use, taught skills to others.
Library experience -one point each for using one, or worked in one, shelved or repaired
books, patron transactions, full services.
Experience with the public -one point each for service counter experience, one -on -one
transactions, and environment that is busy and requires special skills.
Job history-one point each for library salary competitive with libraries, progressive duties
and positions, continuous employment.
Part 2
Tested three top scorers on shelving, address differences, and basic computer skills.
Part 3
Interviews applicants to find out their availability, abilities, and suitability. Applicants
were also asked what they would do in certain situations.
1. Are you available to work the days and hours listed on the 'additional information'
sheet?
2. Are you available any other times?
3. How much notice do you need if you were asked to come in early?
4. What computer operating systems and programs are you familiar with and how
knowledgeable are you with them?
5. What do you use computers for?
6. Have you ever instructed anyone on how to use a computer or assisted anyone one -on-
one?
7. How did you learn to use a computer?
8. What, if any, troubleshooting have you done to get a computer to work better?
9. What email are you familiar with?
10. What types of Internet searches have you performed?
11. What kind of people bother you and how do you handle them in a work situation?
12. You notice that someone is in an inappropriate site at one of our computers and you
know that they signed a policy agreeing not to use our computers that way. What would
you do?
13. How would you handle a patron who says that they did not borrow an item that is
overdue?
14. Give me an example of how you have put aside a personal conflict with someone who
was a customer or used your place of work?
15. Give an example of how you have co- operated with your fellow workers.
16. What do you have to contribute to the library as an employee?
17. Are you seeking long term employment?
18. What questions do you have about this position?
LAUREL PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWS
Tax forms are available at the Laurel Public Library. Most Federal and Montana
State tax forms are available or can be downloaded from the Internet and printed
at the library. It will cost ten cents a page for forms and instructions, which
require printing or photocopying.
The General Federation of Women's Clubs will be hosting a play and Easter egg
hunt on Wednesday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at the library. Please join us.
This year's summer reading program theme is `Laughing it Up at Your Library'.
Watch your local newspaper for more details as summer approaches.
The Board of Trustees of the Laurel Public Library is looking for volunteers to
start a Friends of the Library group. The emphasis of the organization will be to
be an advocacy group, raise funds, host projects and programs, collaborate with
the board, and to have fun. Please contact the library and indicate any interest
you may have in volunteering. The Library is located at 720 W 3rd Street and the
phone number is 628 -4961. Winter Library Hours (Labor Day to Memorial Day)
are 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to noon on
Saturdays. Summer Library Hours (Memorial Day to Labor Day) are 9 am to 7:30
p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 am to noon on Saturdays.

IT IS TIME TO UPDATE YOUR LIBRARY'S ON -LINE
MONTANA LIBRARY DIRECTORY INFORMATION FOR 2003
DEADLINE: MARCH 5, 2003
Please update your current on -line directory information. To access the Montana Library
Directory:
• Go to:. http: / /montanalibraries.org /Directory/mldHome.asp.
• Click on the "Edit" button. .
• Use the drop down menus to narrow the search for your library. (Picking City
and Type of Library works well.) Then click on the "Search" button.
• Click on your library's name to reach the login page.
• Enter your password and click on the "Login" button.
• At this point a Main Menu will appear. Please start with the instructions, click on
the "Introduction" part.
The directory will be printed in early March and distributed in late March. Each library
that updates their information will receive one copy. Others will be encouraged to use the on-
line version.
This means that you have until March 5, 2003 to make changes to your library
information for the new publication that will be printed in March. In April, the on -line PDF
version of the directory will be available to print if your library would like more copies.

South Central Federation of Libraries
Public Library Grant Request FY 2002 - 03
The South Central Federation of Libraries, in its FY2003 Plan of Service, allows public libraries to apply
for grants that will allow them to upgrade their individual libraries in a way that will benefit the respective
community, the Federation and the Montana State Library . The grant request should reflect efforts to
meet at least one of the goals of the long range plan of the Federation. (copy attached) Please reference
the request with the specific goal that you are aiming for and how you intend to rneet that goal using the
Federation funds. (for example: red. Goal #1 I Ensure that all federation libraries have phone service in
their library. Federation. Funds will be used to pay the monthly telephone bill that Erate does not cover.)

• The initial amount available to public libraries this year will be $ 1,000.
• This grant application must be received by March 1, 2003 in order to be eligible for the funds.
• No public library grants will be awarded after that date. Any year -end funds will only be distributed
to those libraries that have applied by that date.
• Receipts must be sent to the Federation Coordinator, by July 31, 20003 unless you apply in
writing (not email) for a carry-over. (Any money that is approved for carry over into the next fiscal
year must be deposited in a depreciation account with the city or county.)

and I will be timely with receipts and accounting information as specified in the Plan of
Service and identified above.
