RE: Public Forum — Protested Taxes C JAN 2 3 2012 i
Dear Sir or Madam;
You are receiving this letter as a personal invitation to a Public Forum addressing
protested taxes, hosted by the Laurel School District. The forum will be held February 1,
2012, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the High School Auditorium, located at 203 East 8th Street.
The forum will feature two speakers; Gene Walborn and Denise Ulberg.
Gene Walborn, Montana Department of Revenue, Business and Income Taxes Division
Administrator, will:
1. Generally discuss the appraisal process and timeline.
2. Describe the appeal /protest process.
3. Specifically discuss the CHS appeal timeline from start to finish.
4. Discuss the issues that CHS appealed and protested tax amounts.
Denise Ulberg, Office of Public Instruction, School Finance Division Administrator, will
present:
1. The impact of protested taxes on budgets.
2. School district's ability to request release of protested taxes.
3. Impact of what happens when the protest is finally settled.
The forum will finish up with an opportunity for audience questions for the presenters.
Though some of the information presented will be specific to the Laurel School District, I
have asked the presenters to generalize enough to make it applicable to anyone attending.
The objective of this forum is to inform the public of what protested taxes are, how the
process works, and how schools are impacted.
I hope you find this informative opportunity valuable and that you will find time on
your calendar to attend. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
To
Tim Bronk, Superintendent
