Peggy Arnold:
On September 25, 2000 I conducted a Fire Inspection of the Laurel Public Library.
During the exit interview, I discussed lit exit signs over the west hall exterior exit and the
east hall exterior exit. These exits shall have lit exit signs over the exterior exit doors. A
hall gate can be installed between the Main Library Commons Area and the halls leading
to the Community Room, as these exit corridors do not exceed 20 feet in length. These
hall gates can be closed and secured to prevent access to the Main Library Commons
Area from the Community Room after business hours. As per your request, I will be
addressing this Fire Code Violation in letterform.
As pursuant to 1212.2 of the Uniform Fire Code, Where Required: The path of exit travel
to and within exits in a building shall be identified by exit signs conforming to the
requirements of the Building Code. Exit signs shall be readily visible from any direction
of approach. Exit signs shall be located as necessary to clearly indicate the direction of
egress travel. No point shall be more than 100 feet from the nearest visible sign.
As pursuant to 1208.2 of the Uniform Fire Code, Latch: Gates and barriers shall be
openable without the use of a key or any special knowledge or effort. Gates and barriers
in a means of egress shall not be locked, chained, bolted, barred, latched or otherwise
rendered unopenable at times when the building or area served by the means of egress is
occupied.
EXCEPTION: Gates or barriers used to restrict access to various portions of a
building or area, provided the gates or barriers do not obstruct access to required means
of egress from occupied spaces and any dead ends created by the installation of such
devices do not exceed 20 feet in length.
